Congo – Transport
– Optimization of road infrastructure

Beautiful Frosty morning summer hills with forest

For several years now, Congo has launched a vast program to build modern road infrastructure, which should allow it to strengthen its role as a transit country in the sub-region.

National Route No. 1 (Brazzaville-Pointe-Noire), opened in 2016, is central to the country's road network. It serves a dual purpose: connecting the Atlantic coast to the far north and, consequently, opening up all of the country's departments. In this way, Congo strengthens its position as a transit hub in Central Africa.

The construction of the road linking Congo and Cameroon has fulfilled one of the objectives of the Central Africa Regional Integration Strategy Paper for the period 2019-2025 (RISP), which aims to address specific challenges, particularly the infrastructure deficit in the transport sector. Yaoundé is now only a 7-hour drive from the Congolese border. This project will facilitate the movement of people and goods between the two countries, and will also open up areas with strong economic potential for agriculture, mining, and timber in northern Congo and southeastern Cameroon.

In addition to financing this corridor, the African Development Bank (AfDB) approved, in December 2019, a loan of $56 million for financing road links between the two Congos, including the road-rail bridge intended to connect Yaoundé, Libreville, Brazzaville and Kinshasa.

In March 2019, the management of the country's main road corridors was entrusted to the private company La Congolaise des Routes SA (LCR), under a 30-year concession. These are the Brazzaville – Pointe-Noire (535 km), Brazzaville – Ouesso (835 km) and Brazzaville – Mindouli (150 km) corridors.

In 2023, the issue of road maintenance will be the subject of serious consideration following the damage observed after the torrential rains that struck the Congolese capital in December 2022. The ministry's work will also include the overhaul and digitization of administrative procedures, as well as the classification of driver's licenses. Other major objectives include the construction and maintenance of the Ndéndé-Doussala-Dolisie-Pointe-Noire-Brazzaville; Pointe-Noire-Brazzaville-Bangui-N'Djamena; Brazzaville-Oyo-Okoyo-Léketi-Gabon border; and Ouesso-Sangmélima-Yaoundé-Douala corridors.
