Congo – Agro-industries
– Considerable assets in agriculture

View_from_the_rural_town_of_Masi_Manimba,_DRC_(7609936324)

Despite having 10 million hectares of arable land, the Congo still relies on imports to feed its population, a situation the government aims to address. The agricultural sector, broadly defined, is designated as the first pillar of the 2022-2026 National Development Plan.

Despite its strong agricultural potential, the Congo currently imports nearly 701,300 tonnes of its food crops. With the 2022-2026 National Development Plan (PND), the Congo projects economic growth of 71,300 tonnes by 2023. A quarter of this expected growth would come from agricultural income. Furthermore, agriculture remains a significant source of employment for young people.

The Integrated Agricultural Value Chain Development Project in Congo (PRODIVAC) aims to contribute to improving food and nutritional security and diversifying the country's economy. The project primarily covers the corridors of the major marketing centers of Brazzaville and Pointe Noire, and the production areas in the departments of Plateaux, Pool, Bouenza, Cuvette, and Niari. PRODIVAC is consistent with the National Development Plan developed by the Government of Congo, for which agriculture is one of the main pillars of diversification, growth, competitiveness, sustainable job creation, and poverty reduction. The project focuses its interventions on four value chains (cassava, maize, poultry, and fish) prioritized by direct stakeholders based on market demand, their contribution to the national economy (import substitution), and their potential impact on farming households, youth, and women. It is structured around four components: skills development and promotion of agricultural entrepreneurship; improving the productivity and resilience of agricultural production systems; institutional development and public-private dialogue; project coordination and management.

The overall objective is to promote competitive and resilient agriculture through the integrated development of agri-food value chains in Congo. The project reaches 355,000 people across the various segments of the selected agri-food value chains. The project prioritizes youth, women, and vulnerable groups, particularly indigenous peoples, by contributing to increased employment and income opportunities in production and processing activities. This is achieved by enhancing the attractiveness and profitability of these activities, supporting the development of agricultural entrepreneurship, and providing appropriate advisory services.

Another government initiative was the implementation of a project to support the development of commercial agriculture (PDAC) in order to encourage the development of small-scale farming. It is in this spirit that the PDAC allocated two billion CFA francs in subsidies in 2022 for the mechanization of the production equipment of approximately fifty farmers.

In response to the need to develop young people's skills in agriculture, a farm school has also been set up on the site of the Congo Agricultural Incubator in Gamboma, in the Plateaux department, thanks to the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
